Description
Paget's disease. Coloured X-ray showing the pelvis of a person suffering from Paget's disease or osteitis deformans. The pelvic bones have a mottled appearance due to their increased porosity. Paget's disease is a chronic bone disease which occurs in middle-aged and elderly people. The normal organisation and balance of bone absorption and creation becomes disrupted leading to thickened deformed bones. The bones' increased porosity makes them liable to fracture, while the hip joints are more vulnerable to arthritis. Treatment, while not usually necessary, is with painkillers, the hormone calcitonin to promote healthy bone formation or surgery.
