Description
Pelvis. Model of a normal human pelvis and lower back vertebrae. The pelvis is a bowl-shaped set of fused bones which supports the weight of the upper body and articulates with the legs. Four lumbar vertebrae are seen at upper centre. These form the lower part of the spinal column. At the back of the pelvis, underneath the last lumbar vertebra, is the sacrum. This bone is made of five fused vertebrae, and sits like a wedge in the pelvis. It is joined to the pelvis and also to the coccyx, four small fused bones which are an evolutionary remnant from our tailed ancestors. This arrangement of bones protects the lower organs such as the bladder and uterus.
