Description
An older Juvenile Bighorn Rams, still growing his horns, feeding in the oat field in the Whiskey Basin.
The Whiskey Mountains are home to one of the largest wintering herds of Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep. They spend the winter season at the Whiskey Basin Wildlife Habitat Management Area near Dubois, Wyoming.
Snow in the upper elevations is needed to force the Bighorn Sheep off the mountain into the lower elevations. Although the Rams come down in the morning to graze, they are not as deterred by the snow. They usually return to the mountainside out of sight with the bachelor herd, while the Ewe, Juvenile, and Lambs remain in the valley foraging throughout the day. I am eager to witness the majestic Rams during an early morning visit, but unfavorable weather conditions have thwarted my plans thus far.
To see these majestic creatures up close, visit the National Bighorn Sheep Center in town for a guided tour or grab a map highlighting their favorite spots.
