Description
The Von Bayer Museum of Fish Culture is in the original 1899 hatchery building at the D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery in Spearfish, South Dakota. The museum houses over 185,000 fish culture artifacts, making it the largest collection in the United States.
The US Fish and Wildlife Service opened the D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery in 1896. Established to help start a trout population in the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming, it is one of the oldest hatcheries in the US and the second oldest in the American West. Every year, the hatchery produces and releases 20,000 to 30,000 rainbow trout.
