Description
A majestic bison commands attention, still in his luxurious dense winter fur. Its formidable horn cuts a striking silhouette against the vast expanse of parched grassland. The beast's deep and contemplative eyes pierce the horizon, captivated by the unseen beyond under the radiant embrace of the setting sun's amber glow.
Nestled deep within the heart of a landscape once traversed by the majestic American Bison, Badlands National Park is at the center of their historical domain. Before their numbers dwindled to the brink of extinction in the late 1800s due to rampant hunting, these magnificent beasts roamed freely, shaping the natural history and culture of the area. In a bold move to rekindle the spirit of the past, bison from Theodore Roosevelt National Park were reintroduced into the rugged expanse of Badlands National Park in 1963. This visionary act has cultivated a flourishing herd with an impressive count of approximately 1,200 bison. These resilient survivors have reclaimed their rightful place in the park's wild heart, symbolizing a conservation triumph and a return to ecological harmony.
Due to continuous conservation initiatives similar to those implemented at Badlands National Park, the American Bison has successfully been removed from the endangered species list. Every fall, the park organizes a bison roundup where park rangers gather as many bison as possible for examination. During this process, each bison undergoes a health assessment, essential biological information is recorded, and calves are identified and tagged. This event also provides a chance to care for any bison suffering from illnesses or injuries. After gathering the data, it is determined which bison will continue to be looked after by the park and which will be moved elsewhere. Those not kept within the park are relocated to other public lands or given over to entities such as the Intertribal Buffalo Council, an alliance of Native American tribes dedicated to preserving traditional buffalo management practices.
