Description
Mt. Rushmore is a large granite sculpture that can be found in the Black Hills of South Dakota, United States. The sculpture memorializes 4 presidents of the United States: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. It was commissioned in 1927 by Gutzon Borglum. Due to its size (it's the largest mountain carving in the world) it took 14 years to make and cost $1 million dollars.
The sculpture is a memorial consisting of the faces of four US presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. It was designed by Gutzon Borglum and carved into Mount Rushmore near Keystone, South Dakota in 1927. Construction on Mt. Rushmore began in 1927 and would span 14 years until it was completed in 1941. Originally, the monument was planned to consist of four figures- George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. However, due to funding shortages, the project was scaled back to only include the faces of Washington and Lincoln.
Presidents: What presidents are featured on the sculpture?

The history of Mount Rushmore National Memorial in the Black Hills region of South Dakota is one that many people are familiar with. The sculptors, Gutzon Borglum and Lincoln Borglum received funding from the federal government in 1927 to construct a large sculpture of four US presidents. Congress approved $2 million for the memorial’s construction which was estimated to take fourteen years. However, it was not until October of 1930 that work on Mount Rushmore began.
