Description
Female pelvis. Illustration based on a 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of the pelvis of a woman's skeleton, seen from below with the front of the pelvis at top. The bones of the pelvis articulate with the femur bones (upper right and upper left) to form the hip joints. The rear of the pelvis (lower centre) is formed of the sacrum and the coccyx. The main pelvic bones are known as the coxal bones, and consist of the ilium, ischium, and pubis. In women, the pelvis is a different shape to that in men, due to the anatomical requirements of childbirth.
