As historic and iconic as the Chain Bridge in Budapest Hungary is, it serves a vital traffic role from morning till night. And it appears more sparkly in black and white! Cars, trucks, buses, and pedestrians are constantly crossing the bridge over the Danube River. I was always searching for 'just one more' location to take pictures from! This view of the bridge is from the Buda side of the River Danube, down on the quay almost at river level and conveniently at a tram stop. From this view you can see the entire Chain Bridge with Gresham Palace in the background and the dome of St Stephens Basilica in the far background on the right. You can also see where the cruise ships (company unnamed) line just about every inch of the quayside on the Pest side of the bridge, obstructing the view and the enjoyment of the pedestrians on that side. The Chain Bridge was designed by the English engineer William Tierney Clark and was the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Hungary, opening in 1849. After enjoying views of, and walks across, this bridge several times during my visit to Budapest, it was particularly sad to see pictures of the almost complete destruction that occurred during the siege of Budapest during WWII. It must have been a true joy to the people of Budapest and Hungary to see this icon of the country's economic, social and cultural life brought back to life. This bridge and the entire waterfront in Budapest is a UNESCO World Heritage area.
